Beginning Digital Photography

This is an introductory photography class for those who enjoy taking pictures and want to learn more about what their camera can do. This class will go over the basics of how to use your camera and what all those buttons and functions actually do. Students will learn to control their cameras manually, and are required to have a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) or advanced mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. Examples of these cameras would include but are not limited to: Canon Rebel series, Nikon D3000 or D5000 series, or Sony A6000 or A7 series. Cameras must be brought to class every day, but the most important thing for students to always bring is creativity, inquisitiveness, and a spirit and excitement for photography.

Fundamentals of Digital Photography

Students will identify basic photographic tools and their intended purposes, including the proper use of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, and light metering. Students will analyze photographs and produce their own visually compelling images by employing professional photographic techniques and digital workflow. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate the functions of a DSLR camera, employ a light meter to measure subject brightness range, apply principles of design and apply digital workflow to process and manage images.

Tools Needed: Notebook, and a pen/pencil, headphones and a portable hard drive (at least 16 GBs of storage dedicated to this class), a DSLR camera with technical requirements to be discussed in class. Editing software and systems are located in the computer labs.

Digital Photo Editing for Teens

Learn the art of photo manipulation, retouching and compositing. You will be able to turn your photos into a work of digital art! Using the open source image editing program GIMP you will learn the user interface and tools, the basics of image editing and simple adjustments, advanced techniques using layers and masks, working with the text tool, and preparing high-quality images.

Fundamentals of Video Production

This course introduces students to the technical terminology, equipment, and techniques of video production. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to perform basic video camera operations and describe basic video equipment types, formats, and functions. The student will also be given instruction to be able to define and use basic video terminology, demonstrate basic lighting skills, participate as a member and/or leader of a video production team, and maintain workflow documentation and production log.

Tools Needed: Notebook, and a pen/pencil, headphones and a portable hard drive (at least 16 GBs of storage dedicated to this class), a DSLR or video camera, lighting equipment and microphones. Editing software and systems located in the computer labs.

Video Production 1: Getting Started

In this course students will learn the basics of visual storytelling and videography and get the shots you want.  All aspects of the production process including camera functions, lighting, shooting techniques, audio will be presented. These skills work with high definition video cameras, DSLRs in video mode, or your smartphone. Learn basic editing skills using Adobe Premiere Pro. Come and get started!

Personal Identity Design - Digital Arts

Personal Identity and Branding Design

In this intermediate design course, we will use Adobe Illustrator to craft personal logos and apply them to identity systems which reflect the qualities of each individual. We will design business cards, letterhead, and other elements which fit each personal brand. Some experience using Adobe Illustrator is recommended.

This class will focus on getting familiar with your tablet, using Photoshop to paint with digital media, along with a focus on value painting and color. A basic understanding of drawing, using tablets, computers, and Photoshop is needed. Please bring your drawing tablet as they will not be provided for this course. Photoshop and computer access will be included in this class.

Web Design for Beginners

Introduces some of the techniques, tools, software applications, and technologies associated with web development and interactive design for web. Students learn how to build a basic website using current CMS standards while incorporating various multimedia, or other interactive solutions. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to define and apply design terminology according to industry standard. The student will be instructed to determine appropriate research, concepts, materials, tools, media and skills to solve design problems. The student will also be instructed to demonstrate craftsmanship, analyze and apply the critical thinking process to the design challenges of specific problems.

HTML & CSS for Beginners Workshop

In this course, we will explore HTML and CSS coding languages and methods for styling websites and creating page layouts. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to define advanced terms and methods for styling web pages, and articulate the concept for a web page design. The student should also be able to investigate strategies for designing for multiple devices and browsers, and identify methods for writing semantic and valid markup. We will also explore and apply various methods for styling web pages using relative, absolute, and fixed positioning methods to control the placement of web page elements.
