Abstract Painting with Jim Gross

This course explores all past and current trends in non-objective painting. Acrylic, water based media, and drawing with collage will be explored. This class is ideal for the beginner as well as the advanced.This class will focus on projects chosen by the student and they will be encouraged to experiment with new techniques.

Students should bring their own personal supplies. If you do not have supplies, Jim recommends the following:

  • – Some kind of support to paint on (canvas, primed wood, panel, etc.)
  • – Acrylic or other water-based media
  • – Tools (brushes, rollers, palette knife, etc.)
  • – Drawing materials if desired
  • – Collage paper is also welcomed

Capturing the Light with Oil Painting with Mary Binford Miller

Mary will walk you through her process for creating dynamic, light filled paintings. Demonstrations on the fundamentals of a good painting and tips to improve your own work are included along with one-on-one instruction with a variety of subject matter. All experience levels are welcome.

Introduction to Oil Painting with Tim Stone

This class will consist of eight in-class assignments during the ten week course. Students will gain painting skills while working toward completing each assignment.  We will paint portraits, landscape, and from life. There will be an exploratory assignment in which the students can experiment on their own.  Tim will discuss how to mix and create your own colors.  This class will be beneficial for students wanting instruction as well as for those who want to explore and create on their own.

A brief overview of the assignments we will complete:

  • -monochromatic still life
  • -still life color
  • -landscape
  • -portrait
  • -micro/macro
  • -self portrait
  • -process
  • -students choice

Introduction to Pastel, Pencil and Charcoal with Gayle Clayborn

This class is focused on learning through exploration in a relaxed environment. Each student works on individual projects focusing on composition, perspective, value, color mixing, layering and more.

Pastel supply List:
-11 x 14 Strathmore Pastel Textured Paper Pad, or similar brand. Colorfix pastel sheets, or pastel board also optional!
-Chalk pastel set, any brand (I prefer Prismacolor personally)
-Pastel pencils of various colors (optional)

Other Charcoal and Pencil supplies you might want:
-Mars Plastic eraser
-Various graphite drawing pencils (1 labeled “B” for soft, 1 labeled “H” for hard, and any in-between that range you would like)

-Charcoal sticks or charcoal pencils (reference the labeling mentioned above)

Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor with Bernadette Bradshaw

This class is for anyone interested in learning to paint in watercolor and is geared for beginning to intermediate students. Students will master basics necessary to be successful in watercolor including creating a wash, pouring a background, color mixing, color theory, various applications and techniques of watercolor, as well as the rules for composition and design. Students work on paintings developed from their own photographic or drawing sources to apply learned techniques to their own work.

This course is designed for the student who possesses a solid understanding of the elements of oil painting. Students should have completed a beginning class in oils. The focus will be on applying the six components of oil painting: drawing, value, composition, edges, color and texture.

Modern Tradition in Painting with Brian Hinkle

In this course, students will develop their painting skills in the representational or abstract style of their choice.  Emphasis will be on the techniques and methodology of painting and on individual problem solving.  Topics covered include color, composition, texture, tools and materials. Previous experience with painting is recommended. All media welcomed.

On the first day of class, students will need to bring the supplies they already have along with note-taking supplies as the instructor will be going over the supply list and discussing student projects.

Painting in Amazing Technicolor with Melinda Weis

Everyone paints with color, with each artist making palette choices that dramatically affect the feel of a painting. Choosing the right colors, however, is not as easy as it seems. This class will  explore all the facets of color — hue, chroma, value, color and mixing. This class will focus on how to apply this knowledge while creating more effective paintings, but most importantly, to paint outside the box. All painting mediums are welcome, but painting experience is required.
