Spring 2019 Sculpture Classes

Wet Carved Concrete Sculpture Workshop

3-Day Workshop: Wet Carved Concrete with Elder Jones

  • Friday, June 21: 6 – 9 p.m. (prep and design)
  • Saturday, June 22: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. (sculpt and lunch break)
  • Sunday, June 23: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Finishing touches, photos)

Wet carving sand mix concrete is a simple and inexpensive way to create durable sculpture. Sand mix concrete consists of 3 parts sifted sand and 1 part Portland Cement, plus water. Once combined, the mixture is placed in a form and after it has set sufficiently, about 3 to 4 hours, the form is removed and carving begins. A typical carving session is 5 to 6 hours. The stages of the workshop are determined by the medium because the setting process is time governed. First time sculptors can make a planter or small sculpture. Making a vertical piece is much easier than something flat as the material falls away while carving.

Materials: Bring any sculpting tools you may already have, or pottery tool-kits are available for $21.50 at Mark Arts.
