Any Experience Level Painting Courses

Independent Study Abstract Painting (Wednesday Evenings)

Students will explore their own artwork and processes under the umbrella of Abstract Art with no instruction in a friendly, welcoming environment focused on self-expression. All experience levels are welcome and there is no instructor.

Ages: 14 + | Instructor: No Instructor

Wednesdays, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Dates: June 26 – September 4, no class on July 3.

For those who do not already own supplies, these are suggested supplies:

  • – Some kind of support to paint on (canvas, primed wood, panel, etc.)
  • – Acrylic or other water-based paints
  • – Tools (brushes, rollers, palette knife, etc.)
  • – Drawing materials if desired
  • – Collage paper is also welcomed

Beginners & Intermediate Painting Courses

Introduction to Acrylic Painting with Alex Browne

This class will cover the basics, like color mixing and how to apply acrylic paint with various techniques. Additional topics include perspective, proportion, and color theory. Students will choose the subject matter for their paintings with guided instruction. This class will focus on working with acrylic paint and mixed media. Various creative styles of painting will be explored for further inspiration. No prior experience necessary.

Introduction to Oil Painting (five -weeks)

This class is for beginners or for those who have painted before, but need a refresher. Either way no experience with oil painting or painting is required. Mark will cover an overview of the materials, application and techniques used in oil painting. Please see the supply list and dates for this class.

Learn through exploration in a relaxed environment. Students work on individual projects focusing on composition, perspective, value, color mixing, layering and more in their medium(s) of choice.

Supplies: Students should bring their own personal supplies, such as the following

Students will master the basics needed to be successful in watercolor including creating a wash, pouring a background, color mixing, color theory, various applications and techniques, as well as rules for composition and design.

Breaking those Photographic Chains That Bind (five-weeks)

Don’t be a slave to the photograph! In this Intermediate level course, students will explore ways to create paintings that don’t just copy a photograph. All mediums welcome. Please be prepared with photographs and supplies to paint the first week.

Modern Traditions in Painting with Brian Hinkle

Students will develop their painting skills in the representational or abstract style of their choice. The emphasis will be on the techniques and methodology of painting and on individual problem solving. Topics covered include color, composition, texture, tools and materials.

On the first day of class, students will need to bring the supplies they already have along with note-taking supplies as the instructor will be going over the supply list and discussing student projects.

Each artist makes palette choices that dramatically affect the feel of a painting, but choosing the right colors is not as easy as it seems. This class will explore all the facets of color – hue, chroma, value and mixing. All media are welcome, but painting experience is required.
