Mixed Media Methods and Mediums

Students will explore the range of possibilities available in the world of mixed media. Whether you are new to the genre or an experienced artist needing a spark of creativity, this class will get your ideas flowing.

Jim Gross - Garden

Abstract Painting with Jim Gross

Explore past and current trends in nonobjective painting, exploring acrylic, water–based media and drawing with collage. Students work at their own pace on personal projects with guidance from Jim. All experience levels are welcome, and experimentation will be encouraged.

Students should bring their own personal supplies. If you do not have supplies, Jim recommends the following:

  • – Some kind of support to paint on (canvas, primed wood, panel, etc.)
  • – Acrylic or other water-based paints
  • – Tools (brushes, rollers, palette knife, etc.)
  • – Drawing materials if desired
  • – Collage paper is also welcomed

Introduction to Acrylic Painting with Alex Browne

This class will cover the basics, like color mixing and how to apply acrylic paint with various techniques. Additional topics include perspective, proportion, and color theory. Students will choose the subject matter for their paintings with guided instruction. This class will focus on working with acrylic paint and mixed media. Various creative styles of painting will be explored for further inspiration. No prior experience necessary.

Calligraphy and Painting Typography with Alex Browne

Create your own hand lettering, calligraphy, and hand painted signs on canvas and wood. Enjoy the process of creating meaningful messages with decorative typography artwork.  Students will start with calligraphy on paper in pencil to learn the techniques and methods of hand lettering. The class will then paint hand lettering and typography on paper, canvas and wood if student so chooses.

Multi-Media: Charcoal, Colored Pencil, Pastel and Watercolor with Gayle Clayborn

Learn through exploration in a relaxed environment. Students work on individual projects focusing on composition, perspective, value, color mixing, layering and more in their medium(s) of choice.

Supplies: Students should bring their own personal supplies, such as the following

Students will master the basics needed to be successful in watercolor including creating a wash, pouring a background, color mixing, color theory, various applications and techniques, as well as rules for composition and design.

Modern Traditions in Painting with Brian Hinkle

Students will develop their painting skills in the representational or abstract style of their choice. The emphasis will be on the techniques and methodology of painting and on individual problem solving. Topics covered include color, composition, texture, tools and materials.

On the first day of class, students will need to bring the supplies they already have along with note-taking supplies as the instructor will be going over the supply list and discussing student projects.

Portraits and Head Studies from Photographs with Mary Binford Miller

Focus on facial structures, expressions, light and color using photographs as references. Please bring good photographs of people you would like to paint or draw. All mediums accepted. The first day of class will be demonstrations by the instructor.
