Mixed Media Methods and Mediums

Students will explore the range of possibilities available in the world of mixed media. Whether you are new to the genre or an experienced artist needing a spark of creativity, this class will get your ideas flowing. This class will be held in the Printmaking studio but will predominately be focusing on mixed media materials and not the printmaking press.

Jim Gross - Garden

Abstract Painting with Jim Gross

This course explores all past and current trends in non-objective painting. Acrylic, water based media, and drawing with collage will be explored. This class is ideal for the beginner as well as the advanced.This class will focus on projects chosen by the student and they will be encouraged to experiment with new techniques.

Students should bring their own personal supplies. If you do not have supplies, Jim recommends the following:

  • – Some kind of support to paint on (canvas, primed wood, panel, etc.)
  • – Acrylic or other water-based paints
  • – Tools (brushes, rollers, palette knife, etc.)
  • – Drawing materials if desired
  • – Collage paper is also welcomed

Capturing the Light with Oil Painting with Mary Binford Miller

Mary will walk you through her process for creating dynamic, light filled paintings. Demonstrations on the fundamentals of a good painting and tips to improve your own work are included along with one-on-one instruction with a variety of subject matter. All experience levels are welcome.

Painting Light in the Studio with Virginia Grass Simmons

Increase your skills to translate imagery from your tablet or photograph to canvas. We will work on principles of design, color harmony, temperature, value and other important concepts and have fun at the same time! Demonstrations and short presentations will help refine skills to develop one’s unique voice. All levels welcome.

This class will focus on learning through exploration in a relaxed environment. Students work on individual projects focusing on composition, perspective, value, color mixing, layering and more in their medium(s) of choice.

Students will master the basics needed to be successful in watercolor including creating a wash, pouring a background, color mixing, color theory, various applications and techniques, as well as rules for composition and design.

Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor with Caryl Morgan

This class is designed for students who want to learn the art of watercolor painting. Basic artistic concepts pertaining to the medium will be covered, such as the three characteristics of the medium (transparent, translucent, opaque), forms of watercolor, painting equipment, painting composition guidelines and basic color theory. Emphasis will be on skill building, and helping students develop a personal style. Specific techniques will be addressed to help students make decisions, work through and complete paintings. The class content is appropriate for high school student through adult learners.

Modern Traditions in Painting with Brian Hinkle

In this course, students will develop their painting skills in the representational or abstract style of their choice.  Emphasis will be on the techniques and methodology of painting and on individual problem solving.  Topics covered include color, composition, texture, tools and materials. Previous experience with painting is recommended. All media welcomed.

On the first day of class, students will need to bring the supplies they already have along with note-taking supplies as the instructor will be going over the supply list and discussing student projects.

Painting in Amazing Technicolor with Melinda Weis

Everyone paints with color, with each artist making palette choices that dramatically affect the feel of a painting. Choosing the right colors, however, is not as easy as it seems. This class will  explore all the facets of color — hue, chroma, value, color and mixing. This class will focus on how to apply this knowledge while creating more effective paintings, but most importantly, to paint outside the box. All painting mediums are welcome, but painting experience is required.

Portraits and Head Studies from Photographs with Mary Binford Miller

We will be focusing on facial structures, expressions, light and color using photographs as references. Please bring good photographs of people you would like to paint or draw. All mediums accepted. The first day of class will be demonstrations by the instructor.
