Drawing lab for kids ages 10-16

2-D Visual Design with Macarena Atha

A presentation of the basic elements and principles of art / design will be made in this course. The student will develop a firm foundation to layout and organized design elements for a variety of visual effects.  In this course, students will gain an appreciation of visual form, develop a basic awareness of good design, recognize the elements and principles of design and how they manifest themselves in the design process, develop working knowledge of formal + relational design elements including point, line, plane, volume, texture, balance, symmetry, positive + negative space,  scale, proportion and contrast as well as define the different stages of the design process from thumbnails through completion.

Drawing 101 with Tim Stone

The goal of this class is to introduce the students to basic concepts of drawing.  There will be four different drawing units in this class: still life, contour outline drawing, negative space, and an experimental section.  Each unit will be taught with the purpose of furthering the student’s skill in not only drawing, but in seeing and understanding what they are looking at and how to best put that to paper through the art of drawing.  By the end of the class, Tim does not want to hear any of the students say, “all I can draw is a stick figure.”

Beginning Drawing

Beginning Drawing with Conan Fugit

For the beginning drawing student interested in learning the skills necessary for observational drawing. Students will work with different mark–making techniques and approaches, and in different drawing mediums, including pen, pencil, and charcoal. No prior ability necessary, but a willingness to experiment is a must.

Intermediate Drawing with Macarena Atha

Students will be taught the means of describing volume by utilizing space and understanding pictorial depth. A real understanding of “figure and ground” is imparted. Drawing is taught not just as a sketch or an approximation but as a medium of enormous potential. Continuing investigation into the challenges of two-dimensional representation. Course may include structural and symbolic implications of the human form, historical and contemporary strategies of visual analysis, and exploration into experimental media. Various mediums will be explored.

Drawing From Photographs with Mark Birchfield

This class covers the process of using photographs as reference material, from conception to a final drawing. Topics include: choosing your surface and materials, what qualities to look for in a photographic reference, how to edit, crop or enhance a photo for drawing, transferring photos to a surface using sight measurements and considerations on copyright.

This class covers drawing the human form from life. Students will study a nude model to learn about gesture, proportion, methods of measurement, blocking in and enveloping, as well as training the eye to see form, values and light.
