Beginners Level Ceramics Classes

Introduction to Ceramics (Two, five-week sessions)

This five-week session is for those who are new to ceramics. Students will learn the basic steps for creating handmade, functional pottery: throwing, trimming, glazing, firing and handbuilding. All tools and clay will be provided for this class, but additional clay for open studio hours is available for sale. Class is limited to six new students. Returning students, please contact Mark Arts about availability of non-electric wheels before signing up.

What to Bring: An inexpensive dish towel or bath towel for wiping your hands while on the wheel. Please also wear closed toe shoes (no flip-flops). Students may also want to avoid wearing long nails during class, though optional.

Tuesday Potter's Wheel

This class mixes beginning students with the experienced and ranges from the basic steps for creating functional pottery to advanced techniques for artistic sculptural vessels. Students in this class work at their own pace in a friendly atmosphere with plenty of individual instruction and help from the instructor.

Handbuilding

Learn handbuilding techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab building to create unique sculptures or functional dishware. Students work at their own pace in a relaxed social atmosphere.

Wednesday Handbuilding & Potter's Wheel

This class mixes beginning students with the experienced and ranges from topics in handbuilt forms to techniques on the potter’s wheel. Students may work either way or both as they choose with Ryan’s expertise and guidance readily available.

Alternative Firing Techniques

This class explores alternative firing processes such as Raku and low-fire salt fuming. These styles of firing give unpredictable but exciting results with hands-on experience of the firing process. All skill levels are welcome.
