Mark Arts

Artist in Residence

Artist in Residence Program

Mark Arts offers an Artist in Residency Program effective September 1 through August 31. This opportunity allows individuals to further their pursuits and development within the realm of the ceramic arts at a supportive studio while at the same time adding a wonderful addition of energy and perspective to the studio community.

Our Artist in Residency Program offers individuals an opportunity to create, explore new work and teach in a fully furnished clay studio while developing professionally and personally in a community of individuals with a passion for clay and learning.

What our Residency Offers

Residents of Mark Arts receive access to the fully equipped 2,000-square-foot facility, participation in clay workshops and classes (space permitting), use of wheels, firing privileges, use of clay studio glazes raw materials, ample shelving all within reason. The resident will also be given a studio space with a private wheel and storage. Opportunities exist in teaching experience and exhibit and sell work in our consignment gallery. In addition, this program gives an individual a chance to have an ongoing dialogue about their work in a supportive mentoring environment and gain first hand knowledge of the day to day operation of a community clay center and fine craft gallery.

Equipment available to Resident

The ceramics studio is equipped with 4 electric skutt kilns (2 computerized, 2 manual), 2 updraft gas kilns, 15 electric kickwheels, 5 electric wheels (AIR gets choice of which types he/she want in the studio), wet room, glaze room with spray booth, and soldner clay mixer.

Responsibilities of Residents

In exchange, residents are expected to work a minimum of 15 regularly scheduled hours each week for Mark Arts. Duties include teaching clay classes, summer camps, loading and unloading the kiln, clay inventory, firing, mixing glazes and performing other regular cleaning and maintenance duties required in the daily operations of the facility. Assisting with workshops is expected. In addition, residents are expected to work to develop a strong and cohesive body of work.

This residency is a one-year commitment. The first month is considered a trial period with an evaluation meeting after that period is complete.

The Artist in Residency program is available to all artists of varying degrees of experience and career levels with a working knowledge of the ceramic medium. Artists with a B.A. or M.F.A. or planning to pursue an M.F.A. are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. In addition, applicants must be self motivated, reliable and people-oriented. Please note: It can be unfortunate when residents find themselves overwhelmed with trying to find balance between their responsibilities as a resident, making time to create and explore their own work, and working a job to pay their bills. This balancing act is one that requires self discipline, commitment and dedication – and is not impossible. Before applying for any residency, make sure that it is the right commitment for you. We encourage all interested applicants to visit Mark Arts before applying.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Positions are filled as vacancies become available. Marks Arts staffs only one artist in residence at a time.
